Out with the Old, Final Full Moon of 2012

buddhamoonI have always been quite enamored with the moon and its subtle changes.  Since I was little I would wonder if the phases of the moon held a different story or meaning for different people, including myself.  When the light of the moon cast itself upon the horizon, I would swirl and twirl and dance in it and feel a wildness and freedom.   When it was just a sliver of gray I would pray that it would be full again and contemplate my own sense of wholeness.   I would wonder what the moon looked like from the other side of the universe.  I would wonder if there was really a man in the moon, and if so, why not a woman too.  I would imagine moonchildren and moon spirits and I would think that they were not all different from me.  When the moon would reach is ripe fullness it seemed natural to bring honor, celebration and ceremony.  In its white, crisp roundness the moon would remind me of Sunday mass, and I would wish to pick it out of the sky like a perfect piece of communion and slip it under by tongue and let it dissolve into my entire being.  The moon is a part of me, it is a part of us all, and it has been since the beginning of time, as we know it.  The moon has much to share and much to teach in its cycles, and as we honor it, we honor our universal Self.

Friday the 28 bears the last full moon of the year 2012 and this moon is holding a potency of transformation, healing/cleansing, balance and liberation.  This final moon is the time of the calendar when our old baggage needs to be addressed with compassion and intention prior to the onset of the new year, and quiet a powerful year to come as it does, in fact, mark a new age.

Energies of this moon are quite dynamic.  Don’t be surprised if the icky feelings and circumstances you buried into the pockets of your mind begin to surface.   Your body might be speaking louder as it demands you listen to the aching back, tight neck or stagnant hips and shoulders. This full moon emanates an incredibly strong frequency that will affect us deeply on a psychological and emotional level.  You may notice your tendency to over-react to situations that trigger unresolved patterns.  This moon also signifies the importance to address unhealthy relationships, particularly those in co-dependent situations and those that require an improved harmony between the family and work dynamic.  It is important to resolve these issues because they relate to our sense of belonging and worthiness.   As we address the unstable parts of ourselves, we improve our ability to build a foundation of life that is rooted in integrity, balance, emotional independence and spiritual clarity.

Now, don’t be discouraged that these things may surface.  When our challenges appear it is because great transformation is waiting within the shadows.   These patterns, behaviors and emotions bubble up so that we can address them, clean them out, move on and create space for new.   The intense pull of this moon is encouraging us to face the things in our life that are toxic and preventing spiritual growth.  As we prepare for the year to come this moon shakes us deeply to sift out the dust and clutter that cloud our perception and prevent our light from shining brightly, happily and healthily.  The key is to not push away or stuff the messages back down, but rather, to demonstrate courage, faith and commitment and do the personal work that needs to be done.

This moon also holds the potential for surges of inspiration, creativity, professional success, romance, heightened states of consciousness (very powerful for meditation), and spiritual alignment.  It is a time of mindfully building and preparing for future endeavors and setting new, healthy patterns, behaviors, and perceptions.  It is the time when we cultivate the life we want, rather than settling for the life we are comfortable with.

People will respond differently depending on their own unique process of life and evolution.  I invite you to be curious about your relationship to phases of the moon, this one in particular, as it is the last of an old era.  Notice your behaviors, emotions and tendencies for the days around the full moon.  Remain aware and engaged in this process of Self-study and trust in your ability to use the powers of the moon to help bring you further along your spiritual path.

Some things to keep in mind:

–       Face whatever challenges are exposed with a willingness to address them and move on.

–       Be receptive to healing, this means that you must let the wounds show and be willing to look at them and care for them.

–       Be mindful of your tendencies to overreact, notice what triggers such a reaction and sit with those feelings, investigate and gain clarity through presence.  Breathe light and acceptance into them, and then let them go.

–       Mindfulness and meditation go hand in hand, so sit still for a while and tune in.

–       Honor all your feelings.

–       Be mature about your emotions and choices.  This is an easy time to revert to childlike, conditioned responses.

–       Practice emotional independence.

–       Practice establishing respectful boundaries and assertiveness.

–       As you recognize old, unhealthy patterns, replace them with new, life affirming ones.  Stay positive and use powerful affirmations.  Create new rituals, intentions and practices.

–       Get your family and relationships in order, clear out any lingering issues.

–       Get your career and professional pursuits in order as well.  Particularly finding a balance between work and family life.

–       Have faith; in what ever it is that keeps you going, just have faith.

–       Trust in your resilience.

–       Put positive energy toward your goals and aspirations, make a commitment to the life you want but remember that it will take discipline and patience.

–       Listen to your dreams, your body and your intuition.

Lastly, love this full moon with all her wisdom and potential, with all her messages and hidden opportunities for renewal and transformation. As she comes into fullness for the final time in this era may we be inspired to pursue our own sense of magic and wholeness.  May we see her phases as a reflection of our own and let her fading light take with it the burdens that bind us to old ways.  And as she gradually appears again in the next era she will grow and evolve with a new spiritual richness, and so too will our life.

Blessings,

Robin Afinowich
